A fluyt (archaic Dutch fluijt — “flute”) was a 17th-century Dutch cargo vessel designed for one purpose: to move goods more efficiently than anyone else on the water. It became the backbone of Dutch maritime dominance.
Unlike earlier merchant ships — which doubled as warships, carried heavy guns, and required large crews — the fluyt was built exclusively for commerce. It stripped out everything that didn’t move cargo forward. No excess armament. No wasted deck space. No unnecessary personnel.
The Dutch understood something simple and powerful:
remove the drag, increase the payload.
The fluyt’s bulbous hull expanded capacity. Its narrow deck reduced tax liabilities in certain ports. Its rigging needed fewer sailors. It could carry twice the cargo at half the cost, and it changed global trade forever. The Dutch East India Company used it to build one of the most efficient commercial empires in history.
In many ways, the fluyt wasn’t just a vessel.
It was a system design decision — a commitment to efficiency, clarity, and competitive advantage.
That’s why we’re Fluyt.
We build platforms and partnerships that simplify complex markets. We strip out friction. We maximise what matters. And we stay focused on one question: what gets the cargo — the value — where it needs to go with the least resistance and the highest certainty?
Our modern fluyt: EMT
Today, that philosophy continues in our partnership with Energy Marketing & Trading (EMT) — which now operates as our environmental-certificate trading desk.
EMT specialises in REGOs, RGGOs, GOs, RECs, and international EACs.
Where the market can be opaque, thinly traded, or slow to move, EMT provides:
- disciplined price discovery
- access to multiple registries and counterparties
- structured procurement routes
- transparent execution and settlement
- reliable fulfilment of volume, period, and provenance requirements
Together, we give clients a trading experience that is cleaner, clearer, and commercially sharper than the status quo. The fluyt metaphor lives on: minimal drag, maximum payload.
Partners, brokers, and professional firms
Fluyt also works with brokers, consultants, accountants, and other advisers who want to give their clients a stronger route into the EAC markets. If your clients buy energy, report emissions, or need verifiable renewable claims, we can support you with:
- wholesale pricing access
- certificate sourcing across multiple markets
- structured products
- fulfilment and reporting support
If your clients expect sharp execution, measurable outcomes, and a partner who can support them end-to-end, we should talk.
